While visiting a collaborator’s home during a trip to Tenerife (Canary Islands) in 2014, I sat down at their piano to demonstrate a reharmonization of the Cuban classic “Drume Negrita” I had recorded recently. I was grateful that filmmaker Jaime Pérez Amador was also there and willing to share the footage he captured. My hosts were members of Simbeque, a local jazz group with whom I’ve continued to collaborate both on the Islands and in the US.
The quartet version was recorded on a collaborative album released with Canarian saxophonist Enrique “Kike” Perdomo.
